RIM Acquires Cellmania to Possibly Integrate New Services into BlackBerry App World
on Tuesday, August 24, 2010
Research In Motion has acquired Cellmania, a creator of mobile content marketplaces. Cellmania has mostly worked with carriers to bring ringtones, wallpapers, video, and other mobile content to their subscribers.
One can only conclude that it is likely RIM will use Cellmania to beef up the BlackBerry App World. The potential in App World is huge, but it lacks in many ways when compared to Apple App Store or Android Marketplace.
Needless to say they RIM is taking steps to make App World a better competitor. Recently they announced that they lowered to minimum price for apps with the release of App World 2.0. It will be interesting to see just what plays out with the acquisition
